Terry’s baseball career began in 1977 at the age of eight playing youth baseball at Essig. He played high school baseball for New Ulm Cathedral from 1984-1987 and during these years played VFW and Legion baseball in New Ulm in addition to Bi-County baseball at Essig. He played four years of college baseball at the University of
St. Thomas from 1988-1991.
Terry played his entire amateur career for the Essig Bluejays from 1988-2015 and from 2018-2020. He played in 832 games over those 31 seasons and appeared in 18 State Tournaments as a player (14 times as a draftee pitcher/catcher) earning All-Tournament Team honors three times. As a hitter he had a .311 career batting average with 920 hits, 73 HRs & 623 RBI. As a pitcher, he had a career record of 73 Wins, 39 Losses with 31 Saves and 44 complete games in 924 IP. He recorded 890 strikeouts and had a 2.98 career ERA.
Terry was very involved in the Essig youth and amateur programs as a player, coach, board member, and volunteer. He was instrumental in many projects: new grandstand, fencing, scoreboard, new dugouts, new youth field, sprinkler systems, field resurfacing and new lights.
He has officiated high school and college basketball and has also umpired high school, amateur and college baseball in all three divisions. Terry umpired the NCAA Division III World Series in 2012 and the NCAA Division II World Series in 2016 and since that time has umpired mostly Division I baseball in the Big Ten, Big East, Summit and Horizon Leagues.
He was the Tomahawk East League Secretary-Treasurer from 2001-2020 and the Jr. Bi-County League President for two years and is also active at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye as a council member and lector. Terry has also volunteered as a youth baseball and basketball coach and has served as a summer camp counselor for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
In the best tradition of amateur baseball, Terry was able to play with his dad, Marlin, brothers, Darrin and Kyle, and son, Jay, over the years. Throughout it all, Terry was supported by his mother, Carol, wife, Tammy, and daughters, Maddy and Mallory.
