Picture
Richard 'Dick' Newman’s lifelong dedication to the game of baseball began on the park board diamonds of Minneapolis and at Minneapolis Edison High School.

His journey in the amateur ranks eventually led him to West Central Minnesota, where he competed for Rosen before transitioning into a leadership role as a player-manager for the Madison. This transition marked the beginning of a multi-decade commitment to the sport that has spanned coaching, officiating, and administration.

Throughout his career, Newman became a cornerstone of youth and amateur athletics, providing steady leadership for over twenty years across high school, American Legion, and recreation baseball programs.

His efforts extended beyond the dugout as he was instrumental in the organization of the local VFW team, ensuring that players of all ages had a place to develop their skills.

Beyond coaching, Dick remained a constant presence on the field as an umpire and a familiar voice in the broadcast booth, where he has spent more than fifteen years bringing the play-by-play action of thousands of games to local fans.

Perhaps Newman’s most enduring legacy is his stewardship of the Madison Baseball Field. Serving as the Chairman of the Southwest Initiative Foundation for the promotion of baseball, he spearheaded the fundraising and coordination efforts necessary to transform the local facility. Under his guidance, the field saw the installation of new lighting, a modern scoreboard, and a sprinkler system, alongside significant repairs and improvements to the grandstand, dugouts, and concession areas.

Dick Newman has spent countless hours maintaining the grounds, coordinating donations for park upkeep, and advocating for the growth of the game. His tireless work ensures that the spirit of amateur baseball in Minnesota remains vibrant for future generations of players and spectators alike.
