A Funky time in New Munich
Baseball is, and always has been, a generational game. Passed down from parents to their children. A game of catch between an uncle and nephew. Cousins playing pickle in the middle, or whatever your town called it. Mom tossing batting practice in the back yard.
It’s about family.
On July 19, 2026, the New Munich Silverstreaks brought family together. The Funk family. Nine of them to be precise.
When the Streaks took the field against Stearns County North League rivals Greenwald, they marched out 9 players named Funk, and walked off with an 11-0 win in 8 innings.
Sure, it was all fun and games for this combination or brothers, uncles, nephews, cousins, dads and sons. But there was business to tend to. The Streaks victory against Greenwald, and another win a few days later against Spring Hill, helped secure their spot for the Region 8C playoffs.
The idea came from Manager Chad Funk, who wanted to have a little fun to end the regular season.
Now, let’s unravel the connections.
Chad, 56 years old, put himself into the starting line up at 3rd base. His son Luke (18) played 2nd base, while his other son Cole (17) played left field.
At 1st base was 51 year old Brent Funk, Chad’s brother. His son, Ethan (18) was the game’s starting pitcher.
Chad and Brent’s cousin, Will (28) played shortstop.

Rounding out the outfield were brothers Ian (22) in right field and Owen (19) in center. Their dad, Karl, wasn’t in the line-up, but he is a former Silverstreaks player. Their cousin, Logan (27) was behind the plate, and is also the son of a former player, Jeff.

Chad, Ian and Ethan all had 2 hits a piece to lead the Funk brigade. Ian added a home run, two runs scored and two RBI for good measure. Ethan picked up the win on the mound, going five innings, allowing just one hit while striking out seven.
Eight of the nine Funk’s did reach base, combining for eight hits and six walks. But it wasn’t just a family affair. A total of 15 players reached base and eight different players scored a run for New Munich.
The Silverstreaks finished their regular season 6-10 overall, 5-6 in the Stearns County North League, as they head in the Region 8C playoffs.
