Virgil Zellmann May 9, 1938 - September 5, 2023 Virgil R. Zellmann, age 85, of Young America passed away Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at his residence. Virgil Robert Zellmann was born May 9, 1938 in Young America, MN, the son of Hubert and Erna (Hensel) Zellmann. He was baptized June 5, 1938 and confirmed in the faith April 6, 1952. His confirmation verse was Matthew 6:33 “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Virgil graduated from Central High School in 1956. On May 31, 1958 Virgil was united in marriage to Kathleen Neumann at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waconia. Their union was blessed with 3 children. Virgil was diligent in all things and known for his hard work ethic. After high school, he dutifully entered the Army. Upon completing his service, Virgil began working as a Telecommunications Technician for Centurylink. He also was a proud member of the Young America Fire Department, retiring after many years. Virgil continued to serve in the community as a member of the Young America VFW and a member of the Young America Hunting Club. It was during his time in the service that Virgil met and married the love of his life, Kathleen. They loved spending time together fishing, watching grandkids and great-grandkids sporting events and trips to the casino. They were blessed to have recently celebrated 65 years.
Virgil had many hobbies and interests. In his younger years, he was a talented baseball player with the Young America Cardinals. His talent earned him membership in the Minnesota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame. Later on, Virgil delighted in coaching his son’s sports teams. He also enjoyed card games, especially Cribbage and Sheephead, and taking scooter rides. Virgil delighted in serving in his church. He volunteered in multiple roles including usher and the collection counting team. Virgil had a loving nature and was always concerned for others. Faith and family were his treasure and he loved them greatly. Virgil was preceded in death by his parents Hubert and Erna Zellmann; sister Sylvia (Florian) Heinbockel; brother Lyle Zellmann; father-in-law and mother-in-law Albert and Dolores Neumann; brothers-in-law LuAllen Kettner, Vernon Raether. Virgil is survived by his loving family: wife Kathleen; children Roxy (Dan) Fritz of Cologne, Terry (Pat) Zellmann of Young America, Tim (Micah) Zellmann of Rochester; grandchildren Mike (Kristie) Fritz, Becky Fritz, Matt (Cassandra) Fritz, Stacy (Mike Campbell) Zellmann, Mandy (Zach) Nelson, Ashley (Shawn) Andersen, Alex (Joao Martins) Zellmann, Annabelle Clark, William Clark; great-grandchildren Ty Fritz, Addison Fritz, Rylan Fritz, Quinn Fritz, Beau Fritz, Hannah Zellmann, Stuart Nelson, Elliot Nelson, Raina Peyton; sisters-in-law Claudette Zellmann, Shirley Kettner, Karen Raether; nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
