Essig, MN
Essig, MN
Doug Radloff grew up less than a half mile from Essig Ballpark and began playing Little League baseball at six years old, continuing through all levels of youth baseball through the Bi-County League. He began his amateur career for Essig in 1981 and played 28 seasons. Combining power and speed, Doug had 740 hits, 211 stolen bases, 108 home runs, 540 RBI and a .343 batting average for his career. He mostly played centerfield but played all nine positions at one time or another. He was selected to several Tomahawk League All Star games and was drafted by other teams for the state tournament four times.
Doug’s determination to give the youth of the Essig community the same opportunities he had growing up drove him to serve in various roles. He has coached Essig’s Rookies, Peanuts, Junior Bi-County and amateur teams. Doug’s coaching accomplishments include leading the Essig Bluejays amateur team to their first two state tournament appearances in 2003 and 2004 and managing the Tomahawk East All Stars to victories three separate times. Doug has also volunteered countless hours to the Essig baseball program through umpiring youth games, prepping and maintaining the field for tournaments, announcing games and even helping with concessions. Outside of the Essig program, Doug has coached New Ulm youth baseball and the New Ulm High School junior varsity. He also coached New Ulm VFW and Legion baseball, leading New Ulm Legion Gold to the 2008 State Tournament.
Doug served on the Essig Baseball Board for 37 years including six years as President and another six as Treasurer. He was involved with many park improvement projects over those years, including new grandstand construction in 1997 and light installation in 2015. He also served as the Bi-County League President for three years and Treasurer for three more.
Doug has been involved in Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited, Minnesota Deer Hunters Association, National Wild Turkey Federation, New Ulm Area Sport Fishermen and Sleepy Eye Sportsman’s Club. He has also been a lifelong active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in New Ulm.
Doug is the second member of his family to be inducted into the Minnesota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame, following in his father Verne’s (2008) footsteps. He also had the rare opportunity to play with both his father and his son, Jacob, in his career while being supported by his wife, Patricia, and daughter, Emma.
