Ponch played Pee Wee, Midget, Little League and high school baseball in Cold Spring.
He played amateur baseball from 1963-1992 for the Richmond Royals.
He managed the Richmond Royals from 1991-1997 and 1999. As the Richmond manager, the Royals participated in the State Tournament six out of nine years.
Ponch was involved in many Richmond Royal park improvements including: electronic scoreboard, underground sprinkler system, new grandstands and restrooms. He was instrumental in fundraising through the Richmond Lions for the improvements.
He has been an umpire from 1998 to 2016.
He served in the United States Navy, and he is a member of the American Legion. He was a Richmond City Council member for twenty one years.
He is an active member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Richmond where he served on the parish council.
